Greenwood partners with other Richmond congregations to host Congregations Around Richmond Involved To Assure Shelter
(CARITAS)
Greenwood is hosting CARITAS right now! |
|
This is probably one of our biggest outreach programs
of the year.
There are a few items that we will be needing for
the goody bags that we make up for our guests. We will be needing
toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, soap, shampoo, deodorant
and any other personal items you can think of. There will be a box in the
Narthex for you to place these items. Remember these are our guests and we
want to treat them as such. If anyone would like to help prepare dinner one
night please call Adamarye Patteson 266-6364.
Greenwood needs volunteers to wash and dry the CARITAS families' laundry,
help with setting up the cots on
the Saturday that they arrive and taking them down the following Saturday,
clean the bathrooms, sweep and clean the shower area every morning after the
families leave.
CARITAS now has a furniture bank
to which you can make donations. These things will go to a family who has
been in CARITAS but are now able to get a place of their own. Some of the
things CARITAS accepts are mattresses, sofas, bed frames, tables and chairs,
dressers, pots and pans, bed linen, bath towels, dishes and silverware. If
you are thinking about cleaning out, remember CARITAS. They are located at
1125E Commerce Road, Richmond, VA, 343-5008. Their hours for donations are
Tuesday and Thursday 12-3 and Wednesday 9-11:30.
If you are interested in seeing
how the Methodist church is helping people, you can go to the web site at
WWW.10thousanddoors.org to see
what they are doing.

SonSurf! Beach Bash Greenwood's 2011 Vacation Bible School |
The weather was hot, but we all survived and had a
terrific week. We had a group of dedicated leaders, youth helpers and kids.
There were thirty to forty kids and twenty four leaders, both youth and
adult.
Everyone enjoyed the opening where we met Dr. Cool and he
introduced us to our theme for the day. After that, we divided into groups
and went to our different stations. During the morning each group went to
six stations.
The Bible story time was called Camp Fire Bible Stories
where we learned about Jesus. We also had a center where we did experiments
that related to our Bible story that involved water and the sea. One day we
actually made a homemade filter to turn dirty water into clean water. All
of the experiments were really neat. We made a lot of crafts that we took
home and had a delicious snack.
Even though it was hot outside we had recreation
everyday. During recreation we learned how to work as a team and we also
did the LIMBO one day. We learned some really good songs to help us remember
our wonderful experience at V.B.S.

LAMB's Basket
Greenwood is a regular contributor

Monthly Fellowship Dinners
|
|
Like all United Methodist Churches,
we like our food!
The cost for dinner is $5 for adults and $3 for children 6 and over.
If any of our church family members need a ride to and from the dinner because of nighttime driving
difficulties, please call the church office and make a reservation and we
will see that you have transportation – at no cost. We want all who wish
to come to have the opportunity to do so. Please give a couple of
days notice.

Stop Hunger Now

|
|
Each year, the
people of Greenwood help feed the Lord's flock by packaging meals for the
Stop Hunger Now Project.
Stop Hunger Now is an
international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution
of food and other life-saving aid around the world. The organization is
driven by a vision to end world hunger in our lifetime and a mission to
provide food and life-saving aid to the world’s most destitute and hungry in
the most sustainable, efficient and effective manner.
|
|
| Stop Hunger Now’s meal
program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated, high
protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and
in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing
countries around the world. |

FunRaisers
|
Greenwood's FunRaisers
are volunteers who use their cooking skills to raise funds for various
projects around the church. They are having fun (and working hard) and feel
like they're contributing to the church. They're grateful to the
congregation for its support, commenting "You all make it possible because
of the great support you have been giving us. Thank you so much."
Our projects have centered lately on the Fellowship Hall, including new roll
up doors for the pass through from the kitchen to the hall, a new projection
screen, storage cabinets and a new
floor. |
 |
|
Our next big project is to buy a screen and
projector for the church sanctuary. We hope to buy all the equipment to
allow us to step into the 21st century. This would be a real asset to the
church, enabling us to have slide shows and other capabilities. It will take
a long time to pay for this, but we are hoping you will continue to buy our
bag lunches after worship services so this can happen.
Do any of you have ideas to share with
us? We are always looking for good things to do. Contact any one of us –
Carolyn, Betty, Iris or Janet.

Road Clean Up
|

|
 |
We
help keep Henrico County clean by picking up the roadside trash along Greenwood
Road, from Mountain Road to Woodman Road.

Blessing of the Backpacks
"Come Back to
School - Come Back to Worship." - Every year at the start of the school
year, Greenwood holds a "Blessing of the Backpacks" ceremony.
Teachers,
bring your tote bags. Business folks, bring your briefcases. A book bag,
tote bag, briefcase or whatever blessed and prayers offered for the new year
is a great way to start off the school year.
Ask
God to bless you in all that you do.
