Prayer Call and National Day of Prayer

Instead of our usual prayer call on Tuesday May 4, (a.k.a "Star Wars Day") we’ll hold our prayer call on the National Day of Prayer — Thursday, May 6 at 8 a.m. on line using the same Zoom and dial in information as for regular Tuesday prayer call. This year’s theme is “Lord Pour Out Your Love, Life and Liberty” from 2 Corinthians 3:17.

Coming up on Sunday, May 23, is Pentecost — the birthday of Christ’s church, as related in Acts 2. Wear something red to worship services that day to commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit onto the people. See Linda Walker’s article in this month’s Twig Bender.

Peace With Justice Sunday

Another School Supplies Drive Opportunity

COVID has interrupted Greenwood’s tradition of collecting school supplies for Longdale Elementary School. But the GUMC church family will have an opportunity to donate this summer as part of the “Day of Service,” closing out this year’s Virginia Annual Conference.
VAUMC Bishop Sharma Lewis is asking that the afternoon of Saturday, June 19, at the end of Annual Conference, be a Day of Service in our Districts. Richmond District churches will have opportunities to collect food items for local church food pantries; make hygiene kits for local agencies and make school kits for local schools.

See the Quarantine Quips for the list of items to make up a school kit. Watch for more information about when and where the kits will be collected.

Flower Calendar 2021

Altar flowers given to the glory of God also honor or remember someone and help decorate the Sanctuary. Sign up today. Altar flowers are $20.

Communion Elements

Those not planning to attend Greenwood’s In-Person Worship or Laurel Park’s Drive-Thru Communion can pick up prepackaged and already consecrated communion elements Wednesday through Friday at Greenwood between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for first Sunday virtual communion, every month in the last week of each month.

Church Finances

Despite the quarantine, expenses still must be met. There are several ways you can make your regular donations during the pandemic:

  • Mail your checks to the church office. If you want to include a donation to some ministry like CARITAS, please indicate the ministry and the amount on the memo line of your check .

  • Drop your donation by the church office during office hours: Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Get yourself a Cash App account and pay securely on line at  $GUMCVA. Funds go straight to each church’s bank account. A statement will go to the respective church financial secretary to record your giving, and your privacy is assured.

Greenwood Food Donation Connection

Anyone wanting to bring food to the church to be distributed on Friday nights can do so during Greenwood Office hours: Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. — 1 p.m. The ministry needs donations of canned meat (chicken and tuna) and beans and also fresh fruit and vegetables.
