For decades, Greenwood UMC has participated in the Food Donation Connection. Every Friday volunteers gather at 5:30 p.m. to organize food to be given away to our guests at 6:00 p.m. Greenwood currently gives away food donations from Starbucks, WaWa, McDonalds- along with staples and sometimes sundries to members of the community.
The Food Connection takes place in the education building (next door to the sanctuary building) on our campus.
The manly men of Greenwood are invited to gather for a hearty breakfast in the Fellowship Hall prepared by Charley Banks. The men will gather around table to chew the fat and hear wisdom from "The Moose." Please RSVP to Charley Banks to secure your reservation today!
Journey with Mary Cullom this December as she presents the history and meaning of some of our most beloved carols that are traditional to this time of year. Class takes place in the Sanctuary Classroom from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. on Sundays December 7, 14, 21, and 28.
Worship will include communion and special offering for the Virginia Institute of Pastoral Care (VIPCARE). An estimated 302,000 Virginians are expected to lose their Medicaid benefits in the coming year. That means many of VIPCARE's clients who currently receive care through their insurance will suddenly have no mental-health coverage. Approximately 40% of VIPCARE clients already lack the insurance or income needed to access therapy. This year, a generous local corporation has offered to match up to $10,000 made in the next two weeks — which means any donations from Greenwood on Dec. 7 will be doubled. Thank you for prayerfully considering a donation to VIPCARE.
The Greenwood Choir will lead us with special music in the tradition of Lessons and Carols. Worship will also include the White Christmas Offering established in 1994 by Lay Member Ike Wagner to help cover any remaining church expenses at the end of the year. Gifts will be brought forward during worship and laid in Greenwood's handmade heirloom manger. Coffee and Connection will follow worship for a time of holiday cheer.
You’re invited to a Birthday Party for Baby Jesus! On the fourth Sunday of Advent Greenwood is hosting a special service for children and their families complete with a children’s message and other activities. Following worship we will host a birthday party to celebrate the birth of Jesus including cake, coffee, and party favors. Members are encouraged to invite the children in their lives as we prepare our hearts for Christ’s arrival.
This service will provide a unique experience known as a Reverse Nativity, a way of telling the Christmas story that begins at the end and unwinds the events that led to Christ's birth. All are welcome to this one of a kind experience!
Worship participants will have the opportunity to prepare for the New Year by engaging John Wesley's traditional Covenant Service.
We will mark the high holy day of Epiphany with guest speaker Dr. Shayna Tolliver, principal at Longdale Elementary, starting our winter school supply drive, and celebrating an infant baptism with the Wilkinson Family of the Longdale Community.
